Volunteer Spotlight - Catherine Halftermeyer
How long have you been volunteering at Food Link?
I started volunteering for Food Link in March 2016.
What is your role?
Every Monday I go to the Whole Foods in Medford to collect food then bring it to the Food Pantry in Arlington to help the others volunteers sort it. I usually do the deliveries to Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, the Senior Center in Arlington and Thompson School near the Pantry. I help with cleaning and tidying if necessary.
Why do you volunteer with Food Link?
I have always wanted to be a volunteer in an association to help people in need but when I discovered Food Link I really wanted to be part of the wonderful job all the volunteers are doing. To be able to give out food that would have been wasted is something everyone should be doing at their own level. I was raised and taught from very young that you cannot waste food as a lot of people struggle to have the basics. For me it was very important to join Food Link to be able to help in that way.
What do you think people should know about Food Link?
Food Link is an amazing association. DeAnne and Julie are the most generous people I have ever met. To create such a wonderful chain of solidarity between people gives us proof that we can act and get things done.
Anything else we should know?
I would like to create a similar volunteer association in France where I live when I am not in the US.
