Five Ways to Upcycle Your Halloween Pumpkins

Halloween celebrations are bound to look different this year due to the global pandemic engulfing our lives. People have been advised to take necessary precautions and safety measures to avoid possible risks. But one thing has not changed this Halloween: our love of pumpkins for decorations and food. But all those pumpkins have a negative impact on our environment. Did you realize that this time of year we use valuable earth resources to overproduce pumpkins for decoration alone, and that most of them go to waste after the Halloween celebrations end?

According to an article in The Atlantic “Every year, more than 1 billion pounds of pumpkins get tossed out and left to rot in America’s landfills. Some are thrown away the day after Halloween, contributing to the 30.3 million tons of annual food waste in the U.S.” The majority of pumpkins are thrown into landfills with other food waste under piles of trash without oxygen. This leads to the release of harmful greenhouse gases like methane.

Since this Halloween is all about starting different traditions, how about we also try to make a new tradition of upcycling our pumpkins and helping the planet?

Here are five ways you can upcycle your pumpkins this Halloween.
